A 2nd Class Boiler Operator in a captive power plant has a hands-on, safety-critical role focused on operating and maintaining boilers and associated systems. Here’s a clear breakdown of the typical Job Description (JD):
🔧 Core Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor boilers, turbines, and auxiliary equipment to ensure uninterrupted steam and power generation.
- Maintain required steam pressure, temperature, and load as per plant demand.
- Perform start-up, shutdown, and load adjustments of boilers safely.
- Continuously check parameters via control panels, gauges, and DCS (Distributed Control System).
🛠️ Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Conduct routine inspections of boiler components (valves, pumps, burners, feedwater systems).
- Identify abnormalities (leaks, pressure fluctuations, unusual noises) and take corrective action.
- Assist maintenance teams during breakdowns and planned shutdowns.
- Ensure proper fuel feeding and combustion control.
📊 Safety & Compliance
- Follow boiler operation guidelines under Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR).
- Maintain safety standards to prevent accidents, explosions, or system failures.
- Ensure proper functioning of safety devices like safety valves, pressure gauges, and alarms.
- Use PPE and adhere to plant safety protocols.
🧪 Water & Fuel Management
- Monitor and maintain boiler water chemistry (pH, TDS, hardness).
- Coordinate with the lab team for water treatment and chemical dosing.
- Ensure efficient fuel usage (coal, gas, oil, or biomass depending on plant type).
📝 Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain log sheets of operating parameters (pressure, temperature, steam flow).
- Record incidents, maintenance activities, and shift reports.
- Report deviations or faults to the Shift In-Charge/Engineer.
👥 Coordination
- Work closely with turbine operators, electrical teams, and control room engineers.
- Support load management based on plant requirements.
- Communicate effectively during shift handovers.
🎓 Qualification & Requirements
- Valid 2nd Class Boiler Operator Certificate of Competency (as per IBR).
- Diploma/ITI in Mechanical/Power Plant Engineering (preferred).
- 2–5 years of experience in boiler operations (varies by employer).
- Knowledge of boiler types (AFBC, CFBC, WHRB, etc.) is an advantage.
