Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor CPP operating parameters through the DCS/HMI and ensure operation within approved limits.

  • Operate and control boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, fans, compressors, and auxiliary systems from the control room.

  • Monitor critical parameters such as:

    • Steam pressure and temperature

    • Drum level

    • Furnace pressure

    • Feedwater flow

    • Turbine speed/load

    • Generator parameters

    • Condenser vacuum

    • Lube oil and cooling-water parameters

  • Perform start-up, shutdown, load changes, and emergency operating procedures as per SOPs.

  • Coordinate with field operators for equipment start/stop, line-up, isolation, and troubleshooting.

  • Identify abnormal process conditions, alarms, trips, and interlocks and take appropriate corrective action.

  • Monitor and respond to DCS alarms, trips, permissives, and interlock conditions.

  • Maintain stable plant operation during load fluctuations and process disturbances.

  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and maintenance teams during breakdowns and planned maintenance.

  • Monitor DCS trends and historical data to identify equipment/process abnormalities.

  • Ensure proper operation of control loops, PID parameters, interlocks, sequences, and permissives in coordination with the instrumentation/control team.

  • Maintain shift logbooks and record important operating parameters, events, trips, and abnormalities.

  • Prepare/verify daily operational reports and generation/consumption data.

  • Ensure compliance with plant SOPs, safety procedures, PTW/LOTO requirements, and environmental requirements.

  • Participate in emergency drills and handle plant emergencies according to established procedures.

  • Support DCS maintenance activities, including troubleshooting of control-system hardware/software issues.

  • Assist during DCS modification, logic changes, loop checking, commissioning, and shutdown/start-up activities.

  • Analyze plant trips and abnormal events and provide inputs for RCA (Root Cause Analysis).

  • Maintain good housekeeping and safe working practices in the control-room and plant areas.

Technical Skills

  • Good knowledge of DCS operation and control philosophy.

  • Understanding of boiler and turbine operation.

  • Knowledge of process control, PID loops, alarms, interlocks, permissives, and sequencing.

  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, control narratives, and logic diagrams.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and generator operation.

  • Knowledge of instrumentation such as pressure, temperature, flow and level transmitters.

  • Familiarity with DCS platforms such as ABB, Emerson, Honeywell, Siemens, Yokogawa, or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of CPP operating parameters and energy-generation processes.

  • Good troubleshooting and analytical skills.

  • Working knowledge of MS Excel and operational reporting.

Qualification

  • Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Instrumentation, Electronics & Instrumentation, Electrical, or related engineering discipline.

  • Experience in CPP/thermal power plant operations and DCS control-room operation is preferred.
