Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation Support

  • Assist rolling mill operators in setting up and operating mill stands and related equipment.
  • Monitor equipment performance during rolling operations.
  • Ensure smooth movement of billets, bars, rods, or structural sections through the rolling process.
  • Support roll changing and mill setup activities.

Mechanical Maintenance During Operations

  • Inspect rolling mill equipment for abnormal vibration, noise, overheating, or leakage.
  • Attend minor mechanical breakdowns during production.
  • Replace worn-out parts such as bearings, couplings, guides, liners, rollers, and fasteners.
  • Carry out routine lubrication of machinery and equipment.
  • Assist maintenance teams during major repairs and shutdowns.

Rolling Mill Equipment Handling

Work on and monitor:

  • Rolling mill stands
  • Roll assemblies
  • Roller tables
  • Pinch rolls
  • Shears and crop shears
  • Loopers
  • Conveyors
  • Cooling beds
  • Gearboxes and drive systems
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Water cooling systems

Inspection & Preventive Maintenance

  • Perform routine inspections according to maintenance schedules.
  • Identify potential failures and report them to supervisors.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and housekeeping standards.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance activities to reduce downtime.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all plant safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Comply with Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance activities.
  • Report unsafe conditions and near-miss incidents.
  • Ensure safe handling of tools, lifting equipment, and hot materials.

Quality Support

  • Assist in maintaining proper equipment alignment and settings.
  • Support efforts to minimize product defects caused by mechanical issues.
  • Ensure rolling guides and related components are correctly installed and adjusted.

Documentation

  • Record maintenance activities and breakdown details.
  • Maintain shift logs and equipment inspection records.
  • Report spare part requirements and equipment abnormalities.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of mechanical fitting practices.
  • Ability to read basic engineering drawings and assembly sketches.
  • Familiarity with bearings, gearboxes, couplings, shafts, and lubrication systems.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Understanding of rolling mill equipment and production processes.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Qualification

  • ITI in Fitter Trade (preferred).
  • NCVT/SCVT certification.
  • Additional industrial safety training is advantageous.

Experience

  • 2–8 years of experience in rolling mills, steel plants, foundries, or heavy engineering industries.
  • Experience in TMT bar, wire rod, structural, or section rolling mills preferred.

  • Equipment uptime and availability.
  • Breakdown response time.
  • Number of repeat failures.
  • Compliance with safety procedures.
  • Quality-related equipment issues.
  • Housekeeping and workplace discipline.

Working Conditions

  • Rotational shift duties.
  • Exposure to heat, noise, dust, and moving machinery.
  • Requirement to work during breakdowns and shutdown maintenance activities.

Typical Duties During a Shift

  1. Inspect mill equipment before start-up.
  2. Check lubrication levels and equipment condition.
  3. Assist in roll and guide changing.
  4. Attend operational mechanical issues during rolling.
  5. Support production continuity by minimizing downtime.
