Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble and disassemble roll stands, work rolls, backup rolls, chocks, bearings, and related components.
  • Inspect rolls, bearings, sleeves, spacers, and other parts for wear, damage, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Replace worn or damaged components as required.
  • Ensure proper installation and alignment of roll assemblies according to specifications.
  • Perform bearing cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance.
  • Operate roll handling equipment such as overhead cranes, hydraulic tools, and lifting devices safely.
  • Coordinate with rolling mill operators during roll changes and mill setup.
  • Measure roll gaps, clearances, and alignment using precision measuring instruments.
  • Maintain roll assembly records, inspection reports, and maintenance logs.
  • Assist in preventive and breakdown maintenance of roll shop equipment.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality standards.
  • Maintain housekeeping in the roll shop and work area.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and use appropriate PPE.

Required Qualifications

  • ITI in Fitter Trade or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (preferred but not mandatory).
  • 2–5 years of experience in a rolling mill, steel plant, or heavy engineering industry.

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of rolling mill equipment and roll assembly procedures.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and assembly diagrams.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers, dial gauges, and feeler gauges.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic systems, bearings, and lubrication practices.
  • Experience with cranes and material handling equipment.
  • Basic troubleshooting and mechanical maintenance skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and handle heavy mechanical components using approved lifting equipment.

  • Follow all plant safety procedures and permit-to-work systems.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report unsafe conditions and near misses promptly.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
