Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and guide mechanical technicians, fitters, welders, riggers, and helpers during shift operations.
  • Plan and allocate preventive, predictive, breakdown, and shutdown maintenance activities.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot DRI plant equipment such as:
    • Rotary kiln/Shaft furnace
    • Conveyors and bucket elevators
    • Gearboxes, bearings, couplings
    • Fans, blowers, pumps, compressors
    • Dust collection and gas handling systems
  • Ensure proper installation, alignment, and commissioning of mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical failures and take corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Electrical, and Instrumentation departments for smooth plant operation.
  • Enforce safety procedures, including Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), PPE compliance, and toolbox talks.
  • Maintain maintenance records, work orders, shift reports, and equipment history.
  • Monitor spare parts availability and assist in inventory planning.
  • Ensure housekeeping, quality standards, and statutory compliance are maintained.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and monitor their performance.

Required Qualifications

  • ITI/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (BE/B.Tech preferred in some organizations).
  • Typically 8–12 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in DRI, steel, or iron-making plants.
  • 3–5 years of supervisory/foreman experience is often preferred.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of DRI plant equipment and maintenance practices.
  • Leadership and manpower management.
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Reading engineering drawings and P&IDs.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Familiarity with CMMS/SAP is an advantage.
