Reports to: Department Head

Employment Level: Junior / Skilled Maintenance Staff

JOB PURPOSE

The Junior Fitter is responsible for assisting in the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, alignment, dismantling and re-assembly of mechanical equipment and machinery in the DRI Division.

The position requires maintaining equipment in safe and reliable operating condition, supporting preventive and breakdown maintenance activities, and ensuring minimum equipment downtime while strictly following the Company's safety, quality and maintenance procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

DRI Plant Equipment Maintenance

• Assist in maintenance activities associated with DRI plant equipment, including material handling systems, conveyors, feeders, screens, crushers, rotary kiln-related equipment, fans, pumps and auxiliary systems.
• Conduct regular inspection of assigned equipment and report abnormalities immediately to the department Head.
• Assist during scheduled shutdowns, major maintenance and annual maintenance activities.
• Ensure proper tightening, lubrication and adjustment of mechanical components as instructed.
• Carry out routine inspection and maintenance of mechanical equipment under the guidance of Senior Fitters.
• Assist in preventive, predictive and breakdown maintenance activities.
• Dismantle, inspect, repair and reassemble mechanical components and equipment.
• Check and rectify mechanical abnormalities such as vibration, noise, leakage, overheating, looseness and misalignment.
• Assist in replacement of bearings, seals, gaskets, belts, chains, couplings and other consumable/spare components.
• Support equipment alignment, levelling and fitting work using appropriate tools and measuring instruments.
• Assist in fabrication, cutting, grinding, drilling and basic fitting work as required.

Tools & Equipment

• Properly use hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment and measuring instruments required for fitting and maintenance work.
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
• Ensure that the correct tools and equipment are used for specific maintenance jobs.
• Report damaged or defective tools and equipment to the concerned Supervisor.

Safety Responsibilities

• Strictly comply with all Company safety rules, procedures and instructions.
• Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety helmet, safety shoes, gloves, goggles, face shield, ear protection and safety harness as applicable.
• Maintain safe working practices while working at height, in confined areas or around operating machinery.
• Ensure proper housekeeping at the workplace after completion of maintenance activities.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, hazards and equipment abnormalities to the Deptt. Head.
• Never undertake maintenance work on running equipment unless specifically authorized under an approved safe work procedure.

Teamwork & Coordination

• Coordinate with Senior Fitters, Mechanical Supervisors, Engineers and operators during maintenance activities.
• Follow instructions and work as an effective member of the mechanical maintenance team.
• Support other maintenance personnel during shutdown and emergency maintenance activities.
• Maintain proper communication with the concerned operating department before and after maintenance work.

QUALIFICATION

• ITI, Polytechnic, Diploma – Fitter from a recognized Industrial Training Institute.
• Candidates with relevant experience in steel, DRI, sponge iron, heavy engineering or manufacturing plants.

EXPERIENCE

• 0–3 years of relevant experience in mechanical maintenance.
• Experience in DRI/Sponge Iron/Steel Plant mechanical maintenance will be an added advantage.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS

The candidate should have basic knowledge of:

• Mechanical fitting and maintenance practices.
• Bearings, shafts, couplings, gearboxes and seals.
• Pumps, fans, blowers and conveyors.
• Lubrication and basic preventive maintenance.
• Use of hand tools and power tools.
• Safe material handling and lifting practices.
• Industrial safety procedures and PPE requirements.

• Perform any other mechanical maintenance-related duties assigned by the Senior Fitter, Supervisor, Engineer or Management from time to time.
• Contribute towards safe, reliable and efficient operation of the DRI Division.
