Job Description (JD) – Melter, SMS Operation
Position: Melter – Steel Melting Shop (SMS)
Department: Production / Steel Melting Shop
Reporting To: Shift In-charge / Production Manager
Job Purpose:
To safely and efficiently operate the melting furnace and associated equipment, ensuring timely production of quality liquid steel as per prescribed grade, temperature, chemistry, and production targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor the furnace during melting and refining operations.
- Charge scrap, DRI/HBI, hot metal and other metallic/non-metallic materials as per the charge mix.
- Control furnace parameters such as power, oxygen, carbon injection, electrode operation, temperature, and slag condition, depending on furnace type.
- Monitor melting, refining, slag formation, de-slagging and tapping operations.
- Ensure the required steel chemistry and tapping temperature are achieved.
- Coordinate with the Ladle Furnace (LF), CCM, crane, maintenance, laboratory and raw-material teams for smooth production.
- Take or coordinate steel and slag samples and make process adjustments based on analysis.
- Minimize metal losses, refractory consumption, electrode consumption, power consumption and tap-to-tap time.
- Identify abnormal furnace conditions, equipment problems, slag foaming issues, refractory damage, leakage or other process abnormalities and immediately inform the Shift In-charge.
- Maintain proper heat-wise production and process records.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety rules, PPE requirements and environmental procedures.
- Ensure proper housekeeping around the furnace and operating area.
- Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement activities to improve productivity and steel quality.

Qualification:
Diploma/B.Tech in Metallurgy, Mechanical, Electrical or related engineering discipline; ITI/technical qualification may be considered depending on plant requirements.
Experience:
Typically 2–8 years of experience in SMS operations, preferably in EAF/IF/BOF-based steel plants, depending on the level of the position.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of steel melting and refining processes
- Understanding of furnace operation and slag practices
- Basic knowledge of steel chemistry and grades
- Ability to interpret temperature and chemical analysis
- Troubleshooting and decision-making skills
- Strong safety awareness
- Ability to work in shifts and under high-temperature industrial conditions
