2. Key Responsibilities
A. Operation of RMHS Equipment
- Operate and monitor belt conveyors, vibrating screens, feeders, crushers, transfer chutes, and other material handling equipment.
- Ensure the uninterrupted supply of raw materials to the required storage bins and day bins.
- Monitor the movement of iron ore, coal, dolomite, and other raw materials.
- Check conveyor belt tracking, belt tension, loading conditions, and material spillage.
- Monitor the functioning of crushers, screens, and feeders and report abnormalities to the shift in-charge.
- Ensure proper feeding and uniform distribution of raw materials as per process requirements.
B. Equipment Monitoring
- Check conveyor belts, idlers, rollers, pulleys, bearings, gearboxes, and drive motors for abnormal noise, vibration, overheating, or leakage.
- Monitor the condition of belt scrapers, skirt rubber, chutes, and transfer points.
- Check the operation of belt sway switches, pull-cord switches, zero-speed switches, and other safety devices.
- Observe material blockages, chute choking, belt slippage, and abnormal equipment conditions.
- Immediately report equipment faults to the electrical or mechanical maintenance team, as applicable.
C. Housekeeping and Spillage Control
- Maintain cleanliness around conveyors, transfer towers, crusher houses, screens, and raw material storage areas.
- Remove material spillage using approved methods and only under safe working conditions.
- Prevent material accumulation near rotating equipment and walkways.
- Ensure proper disposal or recovery of spilled raw materials according to plant procedures.
D. Safety and Operational Discipline
- Follow Permit to Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and equipment isolation procedures.
- Never clean, adjust, or remove blockages from moving equipment.
- Ensure all guards, covers, emergency pull cords, and safety interlocks are in place.
- Use required PPE, including safety helmet, safety shoes, gloves, goggles, and dust mask or respirator as specified.
- Follow conveyor crossing rules and use designated walkways.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, and accidents to the shift in-charge.
E. Coordination and Reporting
- Coordinate with the control room, shift in-charge, raw material yard personnel, and maintenance teams.
- Maintain communication regarding material availability, conveyor status, blockages, and equipment breakdowns.
- Record equipment running hours, stoppages, abnormalities, and material handling activities in the shift logbook.
- Assist maintenance personnel during inspections and breakdown rectification after proper isolation and authorization.
- Ensure proper shift handover and communicate all pending issues to the incoming operator.
3. Educational Qualification
- ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- Candidates with relevant industrial experience and practical knowledge of material handling systems may also be considered as per company policy.
4. Experience
- Typically 1–5 years of experience in RMHS, DRI, sponge iron, steel, cement, mining, or other bulk material handling plants.
- Experience in operating belt conveyors, crushers, vibrating screens, and feeders is preferred.
5. Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Basic knowledge of belt conveyor systems and bulk material handling equipment.
- Understanding of crushers, vibrating screens, feeders, chutes, idlers, pulleys, and gearboxes.
- Ability to identify abnormal noise, vibration, belt misalignment, spillage, and material blockage.
- Basic understanding of mechanical safety, equipment guarding, PTW, and LOTO.
- Ability to maintain shift records and communicate equipment abnormalities.
- Knowledge of housekeeping and dust control practices.
6. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Availability and smooth operation of RMHS equipment.
- Timely and uninterrupted supply of raw materials to the DRI process.
- Reduction in conveyor stoppages and material spillage.
- Timely reporting of equipment abnormalities.
- Compliance with housekeeping and safety standards.
- Proper shift logbook maintenance and handover.
- Zero unsafe operating practices and improved safety compliance.
