Job Title: Senior Shift Incharge – SMS (Operations)
Department: Steel Melting Shop (SMS)
Reports To: SMS Operations Manager / Production Head
Role Summary:
Responsible for overseeing and managing all shift operations in the Steel Melting Shop, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality steel production while meeting production targets and maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Production Management
- Execute daily production plans as per targets.
- Monitor furnace operations (EAF/BOF/IF) and ensure optimum performance.
- Ensure proper sequencing of heats and minimize downtime.
- Coordinate with CCM (Continuous Casting Machine) for smooth metal flow.
2. Process Control & Optimization
- Maintain process parameters such as temperature, chemistry, and refining time.
- Ensure proper use of raw materials (scrap, DRI, ferroalloys, fluxes).
- Optimize power consumption, yield, and tap-to-tap time.
3. Quality Assurance
- Ensure steel grade meets required specifications.
- Monitor sampling, testing, and corrective actions.
- Reduce rejections and improve first-time-right production.
4. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce safety practices and use of PPE.
- Conduct safety briefings/toolbox talks before shifts.
- Ensure compliance with plant safety standards and statutory regulations.
5. Team Management
- Supervise shift operators, technicians, and contract workforce.
- Allocate manpower effectively across furnace, LRF, and casting areas.
- Train and guide team members for skill enhancement.
6. Maintenance Coordination
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Ensure minimal downtime and quick issue resolution during shift.
7. Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare shift reports (production, delays, quality, incidents).
- Maintain logs of heat data, consumables, and performance metrics.
- Report abnormalities and suggest improvements.
8. Cost Control
- Monitor consumption of electrodes, refractories, alloys, and power.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Production target achievement
- Yield and recovery percentage
- Power consumption per ton
- Tap-to-tap time
- Rejection rate / quality deviations
- Safety incidents (zero harm goal)
Qualifications:
- B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical Engineering
- Diploma with significant experience may also be considered
Experience:
- 8–15 years in Steel Melting Shop operations
- Experience in EAF/BOF/Induction Furnace and secondary metallurgy (LRF/VD) preferred
- Prior shift handling experience is essential
