JOB DESCRIPTION (JD)

Position: Shift-In Charge

Department: Mechanical

Division: RMD Division
Reporting to: Department Head – Mechanical & Divisional Head
Function: Maintenance & Operations


1. JOB PURPOSE

To effectively manage and supervise the mechanical maintenance activities during the assigned shift, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operation of plant machinery and equipment. The position is responsible for timely response to breakdowns, preventive maintenance, coordination with junior and senior personnel, and maintaining safe and reliable plant operations.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shift Management:
    Effectively handle and manage the assigned shift with proper planning, supervision, and coordination of all mechanical maintenance activities.
  • Mechanical Maintenance:
    Ensure proper maintenance, inspection, servicing, and upkeep of mechanical equipment and machinery to achieve maximum availability and reliability.
  • Breakdown Handling:
    Attend to mechanical breakdowns promptly, identify the root cause of failures, and ensure timely restoration of equipment to minimize production loss and downtime.
  • Coordination with Team:
    Maintain effective coordination with Junior Engineers, Technicians, Fitters, Operators, and other maintenance personnel regarding breakdowns, maintenance activities, and equipment-related issues.
  • Coordination with Seniors:
    Immediately communicate major breakdowns, critical equipment failures, maintenance requirements, and other significant issues to the concerned senior officers / Department Head.
  • Preventive Maintenance:
    Ensure timely execution of preventive and planned maintenance activities as per the prescribed maintenance schedule.
  • Work Allocation:
    Allocate maintenance jobs to available manpower according to priority, skill, workload, and operational requirements and monitor completion of assigned jobs.
  • Equipment Monitoring:
    Regularly monitor the condition and performance of mechanical equipment and identify abnormalities such as unusual noise, vibration, overheating, leakage, or wear and tear.
  • Root Cause Analysis:
    Analyse recurring breakdowns and equipment failures and coordinate with the concerned team for systematic corrective and preventive action.
  • Maintenance Documentation:
    Ensure proper recording and reporting of breakdowns, maintenance activities, equipment status, spare requirements, and shift-related maintenance information.
  • Shift Handover:
    Provide proper and systematic handover of pending maintenance jobs, breakdown status, critical observations, and other relevant information to the incoming shift.
  • Safety Compliance:
    Ensure that all mechanical maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with company safety procedures, SOPs, work permits, and applicable safety standards.
  • Spare Parts & Tools:
    Coordinate with the concerned personnel regarding the availability and requirement of critical spares, tools, tackles, and other maintenance materials.
  • Production Coordination:
    Coordinate with the Production / Operations Department to plan maintenance activities without unnecessarily affecting production and to ensure quick restoration after breakdowns.
  • Housekeeping:
    Ensure proper housekeeping and cleanliness at maintenance work areas and around mechanical equipment.
  • Manpower Discipline:
    Supervise the maintenance team effectively and ensure discipline, punctuality, productivity, and adherence to company rules and procedures during the shift.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    Identify opportunities for improving equipment reliability, reducing breakdown frequency, minimizing downtime, and enhancing overall maintenance efficiency.

3. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPIs)

  • Reduction in mechanical breakdown frequency and downtime.
  • Timely response and restoration of equipment during breakdowns.
  • Effective execution of preventive and planned maintenance.
  • Improvement in equipment availability and reliability.
  • Proper utilization and supervision of maintenance manpower.
  • Timely completion of assigned maintenance jobs.
  • Compliance with safety procedures and maintenance SOPs.
  • Accuracy and timely submission of shift maintenance reports.
  • Effective coordination between Mechanical, Production, and other concerned departments.

4. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Good understanding of industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to handle breakdown situations under pressure.
  • Effective manpower handling and team coordination skills.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
  • Problem-solving and analytical ability.
  • Ability to prioritize maintenance activities according to operational requirements.
  • Strong commitment towards safety, discipline, and quality.

5. EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Qualification:
ITI/ Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.

Experience:
Relevant experience in mechanical maintenance in a steel plant, RMD / rolling mill, manufacturing plant, or similar heavy industrial.

6. AUTHORITY & ACCOUNTABILITY

The Shift-In Charge – Mechanical shall be responsible and accountable for the effective execution of mechanical maintenance activities during the assigned shift, timely handling of breakdowns, proper utilization of manpower and resources, equipment reliability, safety compliance, and effective communication with both junior and senior personnel.
