Key Responsibilities
- Chemical Analysis
- Analyze iron ore, pellets, coal, dolomite and DRI/sponge iron.
- Determine Total Fe, Metallic Fe, FeO, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, CaO, MgO, P and S as applicable.
- Conduct coal analysis including moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon and sulphur.
- Calculate and monitor metallization and degree of reduction of DRI.
- Physical & Metallurgical Testing
- Conduct sieve analysis and size distribution.
- Perform Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index, Cold Crushing Strength (CCS), porosity and other applicable tests.
- Perform testing related to pellet/DRI quality and degradation characteristics.
- Support investigation of abnormal product quality and process deviations.
- Laboratory Instrumentation
- Operate and supervise instruments such as:
- XRF / spectrometer
- Carbon-Sulphur analyzer
- Bomb calorimeter
- Satmagan / magnetic analyzer
- TGA/proximate analyzer
- Analytical balances and other laboratory equipment
- Ensure proper calibration, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments.
- Operate and supervise instruments such as:
- Quality Control & Process Support
- Ensure testing is carried out according to approved SOPs, specifications and applicable standards.
- Monitor analytical trends and immediately report out-of-specification results.
- Coordinate with DRI Operations to identify causes of quality deviations and recommend corrective actions.
- Support process optimization through analytical data and trend analysis.
- Sampling & Documentation
- Ensure representative sampling of incoming raw materials, process streams and finished DRI.
- Verify sample preparation and testing procedures.
- Maintain test registers, calibration records, reagent records, COA/test reports and laboratory documentation.
- Prepare daily, shift-wise and monthly QC reports.
- Laboratory Management
- Supervise Chemists, Junior Chemists and Laboratory Technicians.
- Allocate testing activities and ensure timely reporting.
- Train laboratory personnel on analytical methods, SOPs and safe chemical handling.
- Maintain laboratory housekeeping and good laboratory practices.
- Quality Systems & Safety
- Follow ISO/QMS requirements, laboratory SOPs and applicable BIS/ASTM/other standards.
- Maintain accuracy, repeatability and traceability of test results.
- Ensure compliance with chemical handling, PPE, fire and laboratory safety requirements.
- Participate in internal/external audits and implement corrective/preventive actions.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of DRI/Sponge Iron chemistry and quality parameters.
- Hands-on experience in wet chemical and instrumental analysis.
- Knowledge of Fe(m), Fe(t), metallization, FeO, gangue chemistry and coal analysis.
- Experience with XRF, Carbon-Sulphur Analyzer, Bomb Calorimeter, Satmagan and TGA/proximate analyzer is preferred.
- Good knowledge of laboratory calibration, validation and troubleshooting.
- Ability to interpret analytical results and identify process-quality relationships.
- Knowledge of statistical QC, trend analysis and basic MS Excel.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety and chemical handling.
